Bismihi Ta’ala

Ahaadeeth and Sunnats of Traveling

Rushing to return home

67.)  When Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam) was returning home from a journey, he would say : ‘I am hurrying to get back to Madinah. Whoever else is in a hurry to get back, can accompany me.’
[Sayyidina Abu Humayd (RA) - Sahih Bukhari]

68.)  Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam) said : “Traveling is a fraction of punishment. It prevents one from one’s normal routine of sleeping, eating, and drinking. Thus, if any one accomplishes the object of his travel, he should hasten back to his home.”
[Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA)  - Sahih Bukhari]

-      Hazrat Ayesha (RA) says: “When anyone has completed Hajj, he should hasten in returning home, as this is more rewarding.” [Bayhaqi]

-      Travels should not be prolonged unduly. When the purpose of the journey is accomplished, one should hasten back home, which is the place of comfort.

Bismihi Ta’ala

Ahaadeeth and Sunnats of Traveling

It is Sunnah to bring back gifts for one’s family
when returning from a journey

64.)  Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam) said : “When you return from a journey, bring back some gifts for your family members.”
[Hazrat Ayesha (RA) ]

65.)  Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam) said : “When you return from a journey, bring some gifts for the people at home, even if it means bringing back stones in your bag.”
[Hazrat Abu Darda (RA)]

-      ‘Bringing back stones’ could be implied literally – where it would mean beautiful stones of a foreign land.

-       Secondly, it could be to said to stress the importance of bringing back something, no matter how insignificant it may be.

-        When a man goes on a journey, his family members naturally anticipate some type of gift upon his return. Allamah Munawi (Rahmatullah ‘alayh) has written that it is mustahab to bring back something for one’s wife, children and servants, which would please them and make them happy.

Returning home at night (63)

Bismihi Ta’ala

Ahaadeeth and Sunnats of Traveling

Prohibition of returning home at night

63.)  Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam) would never return to his home (late at) night, after returning from a journey.

[Hazrat Anas Ibn Maalik (RA)- Mishkaat / Sahih Bukhari]

Sayyidina Jaabir (RA) says : ‘If anyone of you went and returned from a long journey, he should not return to his family members at night.”

[Mishkaat / Sahih Bukhari]

On one occasion, the Sahabah (RA) returned at night from a journey with Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam). Some of them wanted to go home immediately, but Rasulullah (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam) discouraged them for the above reasons.

Note : This would apply when they have no information of one’s arrival, or the arrival is unexpected. However, if they are expecting one’s return, it is a different matter altogether. The inconvenience and discomfort that could be caused by a sudden, unexpected arrival is obvious.

Returning home after performing the Fardh Salaah (62)

Bismihi Ta’ala

Ahaadeeth and Sunnats of Traveling

Returning home after performing Zuhr Salaah

62.)  Nabi (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi waSallam) would not return home unless he had performed Zuhr Salaah.
[Hazrat Anas Ibn Maalik (RA)]

-      If a person arrives before the time of any Fardh Salaah, it is best to remain in the Masjid until Salaah has been performed and then return to his family. Meeting ones’ family at the approach of a Salaah could cause one to be delayed or even miss the Salaah completely.
